High Voltage Pulse-Width Generator for the Algae Biofuel Project

    Get PDF
This purpose of this project, sponsored by Boeing and advised by Dr. Arakaki and Dr. Taufik, is to build a high voltage pulse width generator that lyses algae cells to harvest the biofuel within. This project uses Emmanuel Loza\u27s thesis on a cascaded high voltage converter with variable control to build a portable pulse width generator with independent control on the peak voltage, pulse width, and frequency. The project focuses on creating a pulse width generator capable of finding the most optimal pulsed electric field to lyse algae. The pulse width module ranges from 10V-80V peak voltage, 60Hz-100 kHz frequency, 17ms-10us pulse width, and 20%-80% duty cycle according to Emmanuel Loza’s thesis. The pulse width generator’s interface allows users without any engineering background to operate it

A Case of Statin-Associated Autoimmune Myopathy.

A 70-year-old previously independent man developed progressive proximal leg weakness resulting in a fall at home suffering traumatic brain injury. He was prescribed a statin medication two years prior, but this was discontinued on admission to the hospital due to concern for statin myopathy. His weakness continued to progress while in acute rehabilitation, along with the development of dysphagia requiring placement of gastrostomy tube and respiratory failure requiring tracheostomy. Corticosteroids and intravenous immunoglobulin were administered without response. Nerve conduction study demonstrated no evidence of neuropathy; electromyography revealed spontaneous activity suggestive of myopathy. A muscle biopsy was performed and demonstrated myonecrosis. Serology was positive for autoantibodies to 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase (HMGCR), verifying our diagnosis of statin-associated autoimmune myopathy (SAM). The patient was subsequently treated with rituximab and methotrexate and demonstrated mild clinical improvement. He was eventually liberated from the ventilator. However, later in the course of treatment, he developed respiratory distress and required ventilator support. The patient was discharged to long-term acute care two months after his initial presentation and died due to ventilator-acquired pneumonia three months later. Since their introduction 30 years ago, statin medications have been widely prescribed to prevent cardiovascular diseases. Myalgias and/or myopathic symptoms are among the most recognized side effects of the medication. Statin-associated autoimmune myopathy is a very rare complication of statin use and estimated to affect two to three for every 100,000 patients treated. Clinically, the condition presents as progressive symmetric weakness, muscle enzyme elevations, necrotizing myopathy on muscle biopsy, and the presence of autoantibodies to HMGCR. These findings will often persist and even progress despite discontinuation of the statin. Very few cases of SAM have been described in the literature. Describing this rare condition and the ultimately fatal outcome of our patient, we aim to further understanding of SAM, its presentation and clinical course to promote earlier diagnosis and prompt management

A Multi-Agent Architecture for Internet Security

    Get PDF
Security issues are always discussed while organizations plan the development of their businesses on the web. The continuous growth of the Internet population motivates more businesses to become connected to the web (Segev et al. 1998). However, this also means that information of companies will be exposed to all Internet users. This causes serious threats and therefore hinders the growth of the web-based business

RFID in the warehouse:a literature analysis (1995-2010) of its applications, benefits, challenges and future trends

    Get PDF
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) has been identified as a crucial technology for the modern 21st century knowledge-based economy. Some businesses have realised benefits of RFID adoption through improvements in operational efficiency, additional cost savings, and opportunities for higher revenues. RFID research in warehousing operations has been less prominent than in other application domains. To investigate how RFID technology has had an impact in warehousing, a comprehensive analysis of research findings available from articles through leading scientific article databases has been conducted. Articles from years 1995 to 2010 have been reviewed and analysed with respect to warehouse operations, RFID application domains, benefits achieved and obstacles encountered. Four discussion topics are presented covering RFID in warehousing focusing on its applications, perceived benefits, obstacles to its adoption and future trends. This is aimed at elucidating the current state of RFID in the warehouse and providing insights for researchers to establish new research agendas and for practitioners to consider and assess the adoption of RFID in warehousing functions

A Conceptual O-O Model for Internet-based Intrusion Detection Agents in Multi-Agent Systems

    Get PDF
UML is one of the most popular modeling languages in today’s industries. This paper works with UML in order to introduce the conceptual O-O model for Internet- based Intrusion Detection Agents. Firstly, we introduce the reason for choosing agent-based technology for Intrusion Detection system. Next, we work on the classification of the proposed Intrusion Detection agents. Last of all, by using a scenario on IP spoofing, we illustrate how the agents work effectively

Cuando la nueva tecnología se une a los documentos antiguos y el oriente se encuentra con el oeste: la reconstrucción virtual del faro pagoda de Fisher Island (China)

[EN] Located on the route between Xiamen and Taiwan (China), the Penghu (Pescadores Islands) are an archipelago and the site of a military garrison. The second largest island, Xiyu or Fisher Island, was accordingly an obvious point to build a navigational marker to guide sailors. Records indicate that some type of a marker, in the form of a tower or pagoda, was constructed in the 17thcentury. However, in 1778the original was replaced by a different sort of pagoda tower. The new structure has long been known to have been a purpose fully designed lighthouse. Although today’s Yuwengdao lighthouse, built in 1875, has become a famous heritage landmark, the earlier 1778 structure, it can be argued has greater heritage significance in that it was an entirely original creation preceding the introduction of western lighthouse technology in China by nearly a century. Thanks to the fortunate discovery of a hitherto unknown photograph of this earlier lighthouse backed by further research in early navigational documents, gazetteers, charts and inscriptions and The authors have been able to make a 3D virtual reconstruction using state-of-the-art Revit software and thus answer several research questions about this old lighthouse pagoda, including dimensions, location, orientation, function and materials.[ES] Situado en la ruta entre Xiamen y Taiwán(China), Penghu (Islas Pescadores) es un archipiélago que históricamente tenía una guarnición militar. The lead author is grateful for support from Prof. Steve Ching and Prof. Stephen Davies during the exercise. We also owe a debt of thanksto support from The Royal Geographical Society Picture Library for providing the 1875 terrestrial image.Leung, AK.; Davies, S.; Ching, SH. (2018). Towards Collaborative Travel Recommender Systems

    Get PDF
Collaborative filtering (CF) based recommender systems have been proven to be a promising solution to the problem of information overload. Such systems provide personalized recommendations to users based on their previously expressed preferences and that of other similar users. In the past decade, they have been successfully applied in various domains, such as the recommendation of books and movies, where items are simple, independent and single units. When applied in the tourism domain, however, CF falls short due to the simplicity of existing techniques and complexity of tourism products. In view of this, a study was carried out to review the research problems and opportunities. This paper details the results of the study, which includes a review on the recent developments in CF as well as recommender systems in tourism, and suggests future research directions for personalized recommendation of tourist destinations and products
